UCLA Store Course Materials (VitalSource Bookshelf)

Overview

UCLA Store Course Materials (VitalSource Bookshelf) is a publisher LTI tool that is integrated in Bruin Learn and available in the left navigation menu of every Bruin Learn course site. It’s a virtual bookshelf, allowing students to access eTextbooks for their courses. Students also have the option to download the VitalSource app to their mobile device or tablet to access, read, and interact with their eTextbook course materials.

The UCLA Store Course Materials (VitalSource Bookshelf) integrates with ASUCLA’s  Inclusive Access program enabling students to access their eBook content on the first day of class or choose not to participate in the program. Primary Benefits 

For Students:

  • Workbook: The Workbook feature allows students to edit notes, add bookmarks, and review key concepts in a dedicated space. 
  • Global Search: Students can search terms across the entire eTextbook content and integrated workbook.
  • Read Aloud: The text-to-speech tool is available for all eTextbook titles and supports all languages.
  • In-Line Notes: Students can take notes directly in the eTextbook interface.
  • VitalSource: Vitalsource is available as an app available on iOS, Android, Microsoft, and Kindle allowing students to access their eTextbook content directly from their phone or tablet.
  • Bookshelf CoachMe: Students can opt to utilize the CoachMe feature integrated into the eTextbook. This feature allows students to self-test using ungraded practice questions and knowledge checks.

LTI Scope

LTI Scope Definitions

  • Campuswide - LTI tools are available in any Bruin Learn course.
  • Sub-account - LTI tools have limited availability. These are often requested and funded by specific divisions, departments, or courses. These LTIs can be found by filtering via Status =  "Available at a Cost."

LTI Status Definitions

  • Requested - Requested tools are in the earliest phases for inclusion in Bruin Learn. This phase includes learning more about the functionality, supplier, costs, support options, existing campus or UC licensing agreements, etc.
  • In Review - The LTI tool is undergoing review by multiple stakeholders, including software advisory workgroups, security, accessibility, funding, data use and privacy, and UCLA Purchasing.
  • On Hold - The LTI tool process is on hiatus for any number of reasons, including: remediation of accessibility, security, data use and privacy concerns; identifying available funding sources; negotiations with the supplier; re-consideration of the original need, etc.
  • Approved - The LTI tool process has been approved and preparation for installation is underway. Prior to availability, post-approval work may include resolving technical integration issues, developing training, etc. 
  • Available - The LTI tool process is installed and available for general use in Bruin Learn.
  • Available at a cost - The LTI tool has been reviewed and approved and is available for purchase by units requiring the functionality the tool provides.
  • Contact ASUCLA Bookstore - Publisher-related LTI tools are obtained through the ASUCLA Bookstore.
